Become a Pope Memorial Humane Society Volunteer and make a world of difference to the animals in our care.

We understand that your time is valuable, and we appreciate that you are thinking about spending some of it with us! We couldn’t do what we do without the help of our incredible team of volunteers, and we hope you’ll join that team and be part of a community that is changing the lives of homeless dogs, cats, and small animals!

Requirements to become a volunteer:
1. Be at least 15 years of age to volunteer

  • Volunteers 14 or younger are welcome to apply to volunteer as long as they are accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times. Certain restrictions apply.
  • Specialty volunteer programs/opportunities also are available for teens, families, groups, and youth.
  • Children may participate by providing foster care to an animal if an adult age 18 years or over joins the Foster Care program.  Learn more about becoming a foster family.
  • Or check out these projects you can do at home to help the animals in other ways!

2. Be able to meet the attendance and scheduling requirements for the chosen assignment and commit to a six-month term if interested in direct animal care. We’re sorry, but we can’t accommodate drop-in or one-time volunteers.
3. Complete all required training before starting volunteer service.
4. Have regular access to the Internet and an email account (preferred).

If you meet the requirements above, let’s get started:

  • Submit a Volunteer Application – Once your application is approved, you will receive an email inviting you to register for New Volunteer Orientation.
  • Attend orientation – Orientations are generally held once a month. At each volunteer orientation, we provide an overview of Pope Memorial Humane Society’s programs and services, answer frequently asked questions about our shelter, review available volunteer opportunities, and give a tour of the facility.
  • Select a volunteer position – At the end of the orientation, you will be asked to schedule your personal interview with our Volunteer Coordinator to answer any questions and to discuss your volunteer position, availability, and necessary training.
  • Attend training for your selected volunteer position.
  • Start saving and changing lives through your important volunteer work

Please note all volunteer positions are not always recruiting. Our shelter does not have the space to have large numbers of volunteers in each department. If there is a department that you are set on, please check with our volunteer coordinator for availability: volunteer@popehumane.org.
